MIT using Drupal

It would be interesting to get a list of all the Drupal sites at MIT -- I know they have quite a few. Recently, MIT's well-known Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) launched its new and improved website using Drupal at http://www.csail.mit.edu. DIG, a group at CSAIL that includes father of the web Tim Berners-Lee, has been using Drupal for many years now. Great!

One of our first clients was MIT's Center for Bits and Atoms (CBA) at the Media Lab. The CBA is a department run by Neil Gershenfeld, who popularized the use of the word "FabLab" when describing a workshop of rapid prototyping tools like laser cutters, vinyl cutters, 3D milling machines, and so on.

The site ran for 3 years and had online courseware, a busy discussion forum, photo galleries and a downloads section for the open source hardware drivers and related tools. Sadly, it was taken down this year after a search for a new online community manager was unsuccessful.

If you're interested in the CBA's view on digital fabrication, I recommend Neil Gershenfeld's book, Fab: The Coming Revolution on Your Desktop, and his talk at the TED conference.

Hi Dries,

My company, in partnership with Stoltze Design, built the Drupal website for CSAIL and it was a great challenge. It's good to see it's being favorably received. We also recently launched the MIT Division of Student Life site (http://studentlife.mit.edu). We're working on a few other projects there using Drupal and we'll keep you in the loop.

I'm not an expert on the inner workings of MIT, however I do know that there are some folks working to try and share custom modules and to support each other. I don't know if there is a formal effort afoot. We have shared some of our work with others there and stand ready to help out.

Let me take this opportunity to thank you for your work creating Drupal and leading the Drupal community. Having built and used dozens of content management systems over the years, we chose Drupal as a solution for our clients first and foremost because of the commitment and dedication of the community.
