I'm turning 35 today. 35 is a weird age. It feels like a milestone birthday; like I'm turning the corner into adulthood for good. Turning 35, it seems, is not without complications. I feel like I became part of the old folk whose cool is threatened by youngsters. Anxious, as I've so much left to achieve and experience.

And yet, I am following my passions and there is not much more I'd want. People have asked me what I'd like for my birthday. I'd love it if you gave me one of the following two things:

  1. Give me the gift of a patch. I'd love to see Drupal 8 come to fruition while I'm 35. Drupal 8 will help make a meaningful difference in the world.
  2. Give a donation to Drupal's Movember team to help fight prostate and testicular cancer. Cancer is a murderer, and I'd like to see it go away.

My first vivid memory of joining the team at Acquia was about 25 of us sitting around a conference room table singing Happy Birthday to you through the speakerphone during a company update. It's been 4 years since then and I've long left the company now but it's a memory I'll always have because it was the start of a great journey with the company and my first experience with how tight the team was with people all the way to the top (and in Belgium, at the time).

Happy Birthday, Dries. Thanks for Drupal, the memories, and giving a guy a chance to pursue his dreams at a startup even when all signs pointed to my never getting past contractor status. There's a lot I miss about you guys but, most of all, it's the feeling we had back then building the company from nothing and turning it into the force it was when I left. At 35, you've changed the lives of millions of people. That's one hell of a legacy, brother.

Now I better get on #1 and #2 to give you a proper thank you. :)

My thirty sixth year is coming to an end. Subconsciously I must not have liked 35 as I spent much of the year telling people I was 36. I couldn't be bothered to figure out my actual birthday.

I think part of it is that our "adult" friends are having big parties for 40. We are old!

I agree, filling our lives with children and passion keeps us young!

You deserve a great Birthday, cause you have done a great thing by offering up Drupal as an OpenSource software. It has been a life changer for many like me. Therefore Happy Birthday and do Have a Blast!

As we observe your birthday now,
Your cake and gifts don't matter much.
These common things aren't really you,
Ribbons, paper hats and such.

We celebrate a person who
Brings happiness to everyone,
Someone who gives more than he gets,
And fills our lives with joy and fun.

So Happy Birthday, Dries and many more!
We hope you make it to a hundred and two,
Because we cannot even dream
What life would be like without Drupal and you.
